Research: Group Meeting

 Group Meeting

In class today, I got together with four people from different groups. In this meet up, we showed each other our blogs, what we are currently doing, what we are doing in the future, and gave advice. I learned a lot and got a ton of inspiration for what I will be doing.

List of tips I took from the meeting:

  • Make a schedule
  • Think of locations for the shoot
  • Make the plot
  • Make a storyboard to stay organized
  • Establish it is a horror movie from the get-go
  • Could paint a character by showing their room - Don't rely on dialogue

Blog advice

In the meeting, I was told that I was focusing too much on research and not planning/production. I realized I was spending too much time on worrying about the blog and researching, but not about making the actual video. This is why I will be making a schedule this week to stay organized and get work done.

Coming together as a group and throwing ideas, advice, and progress has benefitted me immensely and will make my final product 100x better.

Research: Representation

 Representation

Representation is how the film maker chooses to portray reality. This can be in gender, race, sexuality, etc. It is very important for films to have representation because an accurate portrayal of society is needed. Also, the audience can connect with what is being represented. In this blog, I will be talking about how I will use representation in my film.

Researching

First, I had to get an understanding of what representation really is. This is why I took notes on it, while getting a feel of what it means.

Shown above is my notes I took on representation, titled "Representation in the Media."

Women

In many horror films, women are represented as weak, being hunted by the killer. Many films portray the women to be blonde to fit the stereotype that they are not intelligent.

Shown above is the woman in Psycho (1960) acting weak.

On the other hand, I can also represent women in society today that are fighting for equal rights. I can make the woman in the film a strong character that fights off the villain. This represents the feminism that is in the world today.

Shown above is the woman in Jennifer's Body (2009) represented as strong.

My group and I will decide on how we will portray women, but no matter what, we will have women representation.

Research: Fonts

 Fonts

The Portfolio Project is an opening for a film, so I need to pick the right fonts that fit the genre and theme of the video. This is why in this blog I will be talking about my research and decisions on my favorite fonts that I will use in my video.

Chiller

Shown above is the first font I may use. It is called "Chiller" and clearly shows a horror theme which is great for our video. This font has a scary look to it and can put the audience into the mood that we want them to be in.

Smudger

Shown above is "Smudger" which is another font I may use. This font has a powerful, evil feel to it that will tell the audience that they must be prepared for horror. I love this font and it is my favorite out of the few I provided.

ITC Ludwig

This font is called "ITC Ludwig" and it gives the audience a nervous/scary feel. The look of this font is amazing and it is definitely a great contender for a font I will use in the video.

Research: Colors

 Colors

Color is one extremely important part of a production that is not given its credit. Color is used to create certain emotions in the audience. In this blog, I will be providing the colors that will be used in my horror opening and will explain why I will do so.

Red

The color red is a huge part of most, if not all, horror films. It is the color of blood, which is seen across the genre. It is also used to create a sense of fear, anger, and violence. All three of these are large parts of horror films, so I will make sure to use red in my opening. Red also represents evil, shown in many films.

Shown above is red being used to represent the villain/evil in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016).

Blue

The next color I will use in my Portfolio Project is blue. After researching, I found that this color creates a "chilling" effect for the audience. Blue is commonly used throughout horror films as it creates many moods. It can make the audience anxious, while also highlighting night time. I want the time of my project to be at night, so blue will definitely come in handy.

Shown above is from A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984), exemplifying the use of blue highlighting night time.

Black

It would be a disadvantage to not use black in my opening because of how many effects it can create on the audience. Black symbolizes death, evil, anxiety, horror in the shadows, etc. It is the color of darkness. I will be using black as much as I can in my opening video.

Shown above is black representing evil/villains in the Star Wars series.

Note-taking

Lastly, in class, I took notes on different colors and what they represent.

Shown above is the notes I took in class titled, "Color Psychology."

Research: Horror subgenres

 Subgenre Research

In this blog, I will be talking about my research on subgenres in horror. There are many subgenres, but my group and I chose our favorite 4 and decided to research on them. The ones we chose are Vampire, Psychological, Slasher, and Paranormal. We split the research up by every group member researches one. I chose to research on Vampire.

Shown above are the 10 subgenres in horror.

Subgenre: Vampire

Researching about the vampire subgenre, I found that vampires are great for horror films because of their need for human blood. Mise-en-scene for vampires is also easy, due to the character looking human-like with a little demonic changes to it. This is great for us due to our budget being $0.

Shown above is the costume for the vampire in "Dracula" (1931).

I found that Dracula started the use of vampires in the horror genre. This movie gives me a great influence of what I want to do because of how successful it became. Directed by George Melford, it is about a vampire that moved to London from Transylvania and searches for humans to drink at night. This influenced most vampire films up to today, which makes me want to do something like that.

Editing Softwares

 Editing Software Choices

In our group, I am the main editor. Last project (Music Marketing), I did all of the editing and it turned out to be a great video that everyone enjoyed. I did this on iMovie, which is an editing software made by Apple. Prior to using iMovie to edit the video, I tried using Adobe Premiere Pro, but I struggled with understanding how to use it. In this blog I will be talking about my research on iMovie and Adobe Premiere Pro.

Shown above is the editing process on iMovie for my Music Marketing project.

iMovie

iMovie is a free software that can be used on mobile phones. This makes it very easy to work on because at any time I can take my phone out and edit. It also has a feature that allows users to make a trailer. This may be something I can utilize while making the opening scene for the Portfolio project. iMovie has plenty of features to use while editing, "options to modify and enhance video color settings, crop and rotate video clips, stabilize shaky videos, add video transitions, and change the speed of clips," says Dakota Wesleyan University. iMovie is amazing!

Adobe Premiere Pro

I really want to understand how to use this editing software because it is very professional and has tons of features. Thanks to the school I go to, Adobe Premiere Pro is provided for free. They also have a software for mobile phones called Premiere Rush. According to the University of Denver, Adobe Premiere Pro has many benefits.

  • Edit footage from any camera in any format, from 8K to virtual reality
  • Integrate Premiere Pro seamlessly with other apps including Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Audition
  • Easily reformat your videos
  • Detect edits automatically
  • Access thousands of high-quality stock audio options

Shown above is benefits of Adobe Premiere Pro by University of Denver.

Which is better?

Having both editing software downloaded, I can confidently say that iMovie is the better option for ME. I find it much easier to use. Adobe Premiere Pro is a great software, but there is so much I need to learn to be able to understand it. Until then, iMovie is the way to go and I am fine with it being that way!

More Research!

 Target Audience

"The target audience in filmmaking is the foundation of everything," says Red Rock Entertainment. This is why researching on the target audience for our video in the Portfolio project is essential.

General Horror

As stated in past blogs, the genre we chose to do is horror. The general target audience for the horror genre is 15-25-year-olds. This is due to young people having a craving for thrills.

What does this mean for us?

This means that we will base our target audience around this age group, which may have some problems in hand. Being that kids aged 15 are part of the intended audience, the opening may not be too graphic. On the other hand, we are running on a $0 budget, so being able to make crazy graphic shots would be hard anyways.

In the end, the video will be outstanding and our target audience of people aged 15-25 will love it.

Research Resumed!

 Genre Research

Today, my group and I decided on which genre we were going to be doing in the Portfolio Project. After long thought, horror was what we came up with. Horror is all of our favorite genre, so making an opening for a horror film fills my group and I with excitement.

More about Horror

After deciding on the genre, researching more about it is the next step. I immediately went to Google and researched on different websites about horror. I learned about different types of horror, what attracts the target audience, and certain conventions within horror films. One important information I obtained was that horror used unusual angles to make the viewer confused and feel unsettled. I also learned that lighting should be dark, with lots of shadows to make the viewers feel on edge. Lastly, I found that sounds play a huge role in making suspense, such as a high pitch key.

Looking Forward

Researching on the horror genre sets us up for the content my group and I will put in the video. It almost gives us a checklist for what we include. This also helps with the transition to planning, which we will be doing very soon.

Getting into Research!

 Research

As my group and I head into the Portfolio Project, we understand that research is extremely important. Before deciding what we are going to do for the video, we had to get more informed on the project and certain parts of it. This is why we spent time focusing on gaining knowledge on what should be achieved and basics of how to do it.

Blogging Research

A big part of the Portfolio Project is to blog your progress. Through blogs, Cambridge sees your project, which is half of the final exam. This is why researching about it was one of the first things I did. While watching a Nearpod given from my teacher, I took notes and highlighted key information needed to have quality blogs. This helped me learn about what I should talk about and how to present it in the blogs.

Storytelling Research

To gain knowledge on having a successful video, we watched a great TED Talk by Andrew Stanton on storytelling.

TED Talk- Andrew Stanton

Shown above is the link to the TED Talk that helped me gain immense amounts of information on how to get a successful video.

Stanton does this by going through all the different storytelling elements such as characters having a goal/purpose. Great storytelling is key to keeping the audience engaged and enjoy your video. This is why using this TED Talk to research helped me learn a lot about main parts of the video.

Shown above is my notes that I took on the TED Talk.

Video Elements Research

Next, we researched on what needs to be included in the video. This is extremely important because these are the basics for the whole project. I researched by watching a presentation from my teacher and taking notes on key points of the PowerPoint that I knew I needed in order to have a successful final product.

Above shows my notes that I took about the film opening and what needs to be included.

Research sets us up for the rest of the project, so it is crucial that we do it well!

The Portfolio Project

 The Beginning

As the end of the Music Marketing Project has occurred, a new one replaces it. The Cambridge Portfolio Project is the last one of the year. This means I need to make it count. In this blog, I will be talking about my initial plans, approach, and how I feel about it. Without further or do, lets get right into it!

Initial Plan

First off, I was thinking of working on this by myself. After talking with the group I worked on multiple projects with, I realized I should work on it with them. We still need to discuss what we want to do for the video, but as our teacher said, it should be about something we know. Soon, I will mention to my group about what I think we should do, which is getting lost. Of course there will be a fictional, juicy twist to it.

Approach

I am approaching this with lessons I learned from past projects. Two important lessons I learned were to time manage and stay organized. This will be needed for the final project because it is half of my Cambridge test. Also, I will talk with my group and explain that we need to focus as much as we can to make this video amazing. This is no joke. This is the end.

Feelings Going In

Yes, I am very nervous for this project. If I don't do good, I may not pass the AICE Media exam, which means I may not get the AICE diploma. Although I am anxious, I do think I will have a great video/project. I am excited to see how it will turn out! Stay tuned for the process and finished product!

Process Of My Music Marketing Project

Music Marketing Project

As described in my last blog, I was assigned a project called "Music Marketing" that has a long process to get to the finish line. If you have not read my first blog, you should go read that before reading this one. Within this post, I will describe and reflect on the full process of this project and what I took from it. So, without further or do, let's get right into it!

Research

Throughout the project, research was a key tool used to give us information for what we were going to do next. The project started off with research on case studies of record labels and bands from the genre that my group received. Since we got the genre rock, we researched on bands such as AC/DC and Metallica and record labels such as Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group. This helped us gain immense amounts of knowledge on the rock genre. This also influences our decisions on how we were going to campaign our artist because of the success that these bands/artists have had. Researching played an extremely important role in my music marketing project and set me up to brainstorm and plan.

Shown above is the research charts for the case studies.

Brainstorming/Planning

Moving on to the second part of the project, and maybe the most important, brainstorming or planning. This helps organize the rest of the project and provides a better result. So, we started this by thinking which of the four songs we received could be used best. We decided on picking the song with the most beat, flow, and tone changes, which ended up helping us a lot when creating our music video. As a group, we then decided on how we wanted our artist to be and how we wanted his mise-en-scene to look. We also discussed how we wanted our campaign to be. Since we made a schedule to help us complete the project in a smooth manner, we knew it was time to start the storyboard. This gave us a layout of our music video which helped tremendously. I can't stress enough how important brainstorming/planning is part of the process is in making a successful project.

Shown above is the storyboards done for the music video.

Shown above is the schedule made for working and completing parts of the project.

Production

Making a music video was a huge portion of the project and marketing in our campaign. Now, one may say this is a really hard part of the process, but with the planning my group had, production was like a walk in the park. Having done the storyboard already, we knew what we were going to do when we got to the place we were filming. The first part of the video was filmed when it was light out, while the second part was at night, taking us two separate days to film it. This led to some problems with not all of our group members being there. Fortunately, Lucas, the artist seen in the video, was available to shoot both days of the film in his amazing costume. Unfortunately, filming in a public area was embarrassing because everyone looks at you, wondering what you are doing. In the end, we got all of the shots we needed and got straight to editing.

Shown above is Lucas as the main artist, Dark Night, in the music video.

Post-production

Now, for those of you that think this process is hard, you are right. I volunteered to do the editing for the music video. At first, I started editing on Adobe Premiere Pro, but it was not working well. I later switched to iMovie and it started to work a lot smoother. This app is a simple way to edit videos which has its benefits, but also has disadvantages. Although it was easy to use for me, it had much less features to use compared to Adobe. This was okay to me because I did not have that much time to edit due to the group wanting to move on to rehearsing for the presentation. Fortunately, after editing for a few hours, a final product came and my group members and I loved it. I tried including funny scenes to make the class laugh and connect with the video. An example of a way I tried to achieve this was putting in a scene of Lucas pole-dancing. After attaching the music video to the presentation, it was time to rehearse to present to the class.

Above is the pole-dancing shot shown in the editing process on iMovie.

Shown above is finished music video.

Presentation

Being the most weighted part of the project, my group and I were stressing. First, we had to make the presentation as a PowerPoint which took a very long time to make. This included everything. So, we spent days making sure the slides looked neat and presentable. Next, we needed to rehearse actually presenting the slides. I did this by staring into my mirror and reading note cards I made to myself, trying my best not to look down and read what it says.

During the presentation, it felt heartwarming to see so many people enjoy your creation. When people smiled and laughed at the video, I felt as if I had received an Academy Award. This changed when I had to actually speak.

Before my slide came, I felt confident with what I had to say. This altered immediately when my slide came onto the board. I war nervous that I wasn't going to say the right information, which ended up making me forget to say a lot about my slides. My confidence picked back up for the last slide because I knew that once this slide was over, we were finished with the project. I read the last slide and answered following questions with my group. We all sat down in our seats with a relieved feeling. We then continued critiquing fellow classmates projects.

Shown above is one of the slides I had to speak about in the presentation.

 Project Reflection

In this project, I learned many valuable lessons such as time management and staying organized is extremely important. This doesn't only apply to group projects and schoolwork, but can be used throughout many aspects in life. I also learned not to focus so much on the little parts, and focus more on the whole. My group and I were worried about the music video the whole time, when in reality the presentation was more important. I will use this for my Cambridge portfolio. Meaning, when I do that project, I will not only manage time and stay organized, but I will focus on the whole product, rather than little areas that don't matter as much. Of course, all parts of the project matter, but if I spend too much time on an area that doesn't contribute to the final product immensely, then I won't have time for other important parts.

I loved this project and the values that came with it.

Creative Critical Reflection

Creative Critical Reflection Well, this is the end. This journey has been amazing and I am glad you could see every part of the hard-workin...
